Words in a Haystack: Methods and Tools for Working with Corpora
Fall 2007 | Instructor: Katrin Erk | Tuesday and Thursday, 9:30am-11am | PAR 303
This course provides an introduction to corpus linguistics. Corpus linguistics is not a branch of linguistics, rather it is a method: the use of text corpora for exploring, documenting and modeling linguistic phenomena.
In this course, the student will (a) see examples of corpus-based linguistic studies, (b) get to know current best practice in the construction and annotation of corpora, and (c) learn to use Python, a high-level programming language, to access text corpora. This course is aimed at students with no prior experience in programming. Its aim is to enable students to perform their own corpus-based studies.
